Why does one become a clown? My theory is that one is just born that way. I was never one to sit around waiting for the world to come to me, that's why I started working on the street. I wanted to learn in the most immediate way. I wanted to see, hear and feel the audience's reaction, take risks and find the heart in the art of making people laugh . That was eight years ago. Over those years what has been the real work has been to un-learn everything I ever learnt! Clowns are not characters, they are people, the most human of human beings. So, naturally, the challenge has been to intergrate technique so deeply within me that I am actually no longer consciously aware of using it. This frees me of all standard reactions and allows me to always find new, fresh responses to the endless situations or occurances that I encounter in the street. My philosophy therefore is simple: the more fun I have, the more fun everyone has. If I am prepared to play; to let my body play the games of rythmn and exaggeration, to let my emocions play the games of expression and communication, to let my heart play the games of laughter and honesty then the public will follow willingly. And that is my aim, to create a magic circle in the concrete jungle where everyone can be a little more human, where everyone can admit that they too can be ridiculous at times. |
